Young people in Luník IX are stepping forward as key drivers of environmental change in their community. In cooperation with the civic association Roma for the Future and the district of Košice–Luník IX, RESDI launched Eco Shield, a youth-led environmental platform developed under the Green Roma Inclusion Program (GRIP – 2024). The initiative focuses on building environmental awareness, tackling energy poverty, and promoting community responsibility.
The project began with an educational workshop at the local primary school, where students explored issues related to energy use, waste, and environmental sustainability. The workshop, led by respected Roma educator Michal Sivák, sparked strong interest among participants. In the following weeks, six wooden waste bins made from recycled materials were installed across the housing estate. Students received environmental micro-scholarships and took responsibility for maintaining the bins and educating their neighbors about waste separation and clean public spaces.
The project also extended support to families in Mašličkovo, one of the most vulnerable parts of Luník IX. In December 2024, over 700 kg of eco-friendly heating briquettes were distributed, helping households access safer and more sustainable sources of warmth.
Mayor Marcel Šaňa emphasized the importance of giving young people ownership and responsibility in their community: “We want them to believe that change starts with them.” Through this initiative, Luník IX is building a foundation for long-term cooperation and social innovation that strengthens both environmental outcomes and community ties.
