The project  is a follow up initiative of the GRIP – 2024 initiative financed by the European Climate Foundation (ECF),  ensuring the continuous  participation of marginalized Roma communities in Slovakia in the green transition.  The new GRIP 2025 project focuses on addressing energy poverty, promoting sustainable development, and fostering socio-economic inclusion through research, advocacy, and education. This initiative builds on prior efforts and expands activities to create a long-term impact.

GRIP 2024 – Green Roma Inclusion Program

The GRIP 2024 project was supported by the European Climate Foundation (ECF), which served as a pioneering initiative designed to empower Roma communities in Slovakia and Hungary engaging them in the EU’s green transition. The program addressed critical issues such as energy poverty, environmental injustice, and socio-economic disparities. By integrating community needs with environmental goals, GRIP 2024 ensured that Roma communities were not left behind in Europe’s shift toward sustainability. The program focused on providing access to affordable and sustainable energy solutions, tackling pollution and climate-related inequalities, and creating new community based opportunities through green economic development in areas of marginalized Roma communities.

Driving Roma Participation in the Green Deal

This initiative enables marginalized Roma communities in Hungary and Slovakia to play an active role in Central Europe’s green transition through innovative social and environmental solutions. It focuses on capacity building, sustainable municipal planning, education, and advocacy to ensure fair access of marginalized communities to green policy resources and opportunities. Key activities of the project include the development of municipal strategies for sustainable green energy transition, development, conducting pilot energy audits of old public and community building inhabited by the local marginalized community, establishing social enterprises, implementing green energy based solutions, and integrating environmental education into school curricula of the local education institutions. By combining research, innovation, and grassroots action, this initiative ensures that Roma communities are not only benefiting from but also contribute to Europe’s sustainable future.
