Funded by European Climate Foundation
The project aimed to empower marginalized Roma communities to actively participate in the European Union’s green transition. RESDI focused on connecting environmental action with social inclusion and equitable access to resources. The initiative combined research, innovation, and advocacy to improve living conditions, reduce energy poverty, and strengthen community participation in sustainable development.
Main objectives
- Support Roma communities and municipalities in creating sustainable development strategies.
- Develop community-based social enterprises and innovative tools to fight energy poverty.
- Build partnerships and networks that promote environmental justice and inclusion.
- Establish the foundation for a regional Aarhus Centre for Roma communities in Central Europe.
What were the key activities?
- Technical assistance and municipal planning
RESDI helped municipalities design their first locally driven sustainable development plans. In Luník IX, Košice, the team worked with local authorities, social workers, and residents to prepare a draft plan focusing on energy efficiency and social well-being. A pilot energy audit in Veľký Krtíš was completed with support from energy auditors and community partners. - Innovative local solutions
A major outcome of the 2024 project was the preparation of a cross-sectoral social enterprise in Luník IX. Designed in cooperation with the local municipality, this initiative will combine housing management, renovation services, cleaning services and local employment. The groundwork established in 2024 set the stage for its launch in 2025. - At the community level, the Green Roma Inclusion Program (GRIP) introduced environmental and educational activities, such as workshops on sustainability and the installation of locally produced wooden litter bins. These actions encouraged residents, especially young people, to take part in environmental care and led to the creation of the youth initiative Eco-Shield.
- Aarhus Platform and regional cooperation
In collaboration with the UNEP Carpathian Convention Secretariat, Comenius University, and partners in Hungary and Slovakia, RESDI advanced plans to establish the Aarhus Centre for Roma Communities in Central Europe. The initiative secured EUKI funding in December 2024, marking a significant milestone toward building a regional network for environmental justice and Roma inclusion. - Network building and advocacy
RESDI organized a regional roundtable in Košice with local governments, and the Climate Coalition. The event brought together mayors, banks, NGOs, and private companies to discuss local strategies and partnerships. Insights from these meetings informed national discussions on the Social Climate Plan and Fund, ensuring Roma perspectives were reflected in policy.
The achievements of this year created a solid base for the 2025 project, which will expand these efforts through pilot programs and new collaborations.
