We are embarking on a journey to shed light on the intricate challenges faced by Roma communities in the realm of sustainable development, with a spotlight on the fascinating case of Luník IX in Košice. This marks the beginning of a series of studies aimed at unraveling the dynamics and issues affecting these communities.
Focusing on Housing and Energy
In our study, our lens is fixed on the vital nexus of housing and energy accessibility within the city district of Košice Luník IX. While this research does not encompass the entire spectrum of sustainable development, it is a crucial step in the right direction. Housing, and the coverage of engineering networks and energy sources, play a pivotal role in the well-being of residents and impact the environment.
Why Luník IX?
We have chosen the city district of Luník IX as our primary canvas due to its distinction as the largest urban location in Slovakia with nearly 100% representation by the Roma community. Here, they reside in various types of housing with different energy setups.
Data-Driven Insights
Our study is built on a robust foundation of data from publicly available sources and databases, including the 2019 Atlas of Roma Communities. Additionally, insights from interviews with the mayor and information from the Luník IX District have enriched our research.

Historical Context: We delve into the historical background and the evolution of Luník IX, highlighting the factors that have shaped its current state.
Socio-Economic Snapshot: We paint a picture of the socio-economic structure of the population, providing essential context for the challenges they face.
Types of Housing and Energy: We explore the diverse housing scenarios in Luník IX, their energy coverage, and management.
Interventions and Initiatives: We evaluate ongoing and planned interventions, with success stories like the introduction of the credit system and the transitional housing project.
The Way Forward
Our study’s conclusion encapsulates the primary challenges and barriers these communities encounter and lays the groundwork for further research and potential interventions.
